RESISTANCE IS USELESS
Affect is
very easy to generate, but hard to control.
Research has shown that just seeing someone smile
can generate positive affect. [What
was the first thing users saw on the screen when
they powered up a classic Apple Macintosh
computer? A smiling
cartoon version of the machine.] Other
research demonstrates that the mere physical act
of shaping your mouth into a smile can affect you
positively. Whether we like it or not...

There is absolutely no way
around this. Everything we encounter affects us
in some way. Depending on lighting and color, an empty space can
feel oppressive or cheerful. So why should
interfaces -- much more involving than empty
spaces -- be any different?
There will not be one
application that is so "transparent,"
so emotionally neutral that
it does not have some Affect on
the user. |
