MOOD SWINGS

A
big thanks
from the Design
Happy Ratty
to Byron
Reeves
and Clifford
Nass for
their original research. (Make sure to
pick up a copy of their invaluable book, The
Media Equation.)
This section is from a talk I presented
at The
Machines
That Learn Conference.
There I argued that If you want your
interface to be as emotionally neutral as
possible, you should avoid using faces in
the interface. I worked with Byron and
Cliff on Microsoft
BOB so we
oughta know.

Unfortunately,
while Affect is easy to achieve,
it is quite difficult to control. As arousal increases, emotions
swing quickly from positive to negative or vice
versa.
| Low
arousal, neutral valence. |
